Kerala cuisine is a definite factor that lures tourists on a Kerala Tour every year. Kerala is the land of the ‘Kera’ tree or coconut palm. In a traditional Kerala menu, there will be an overwhelming presence of coconut and spices. Plantain leaves substitute plates.
Most tourists on a Kerala Tour are treated to the local delicacies of Kerala. A typical Keral breakfast may be puttu – ground rice and coconut steam-cooked together - , idli and sambar, dosa and chutney, idiyappam or the most delicious appam. Appam is a kind of pancake – circular in shape with a crisp, lacy frill - made of rice flour fermented with toddy. It is eaten with chicken or vegetable stew. Rice gruel, payaru (green gram), kappa (tapioca) and fish curry are traditional favorites of Keralites.
Biryani, which is a mouthwatering dish of rice cooked along with meat, onions, chilies and other spices, is a Muslim culinary delight. Christians have interesting recipes to make an array of fish dishes such as meen pollichathu, fish molee and so on. Christian cookery specially caters to those with a sweet tooth – crunchy kuzhalappam, achappam, cheeda, churuttu, etc. |
